Served in Air Intelligence HQBF Steamer Point from September 1952 - September 1953. 92 years old now and still have good memories of great friendships started during my time there. Must be one of the few left from that era when posting there was obviously more pleasureable than in the years of conflict that followed. |

Hi, I\'m wondering if anyone might remember my late father John William Smith from New Mills, Derbyshire, his nickname was possibly \"Smudge\" and he most likely served in Aden around 1962/3. Not sure which unit he served with but I may be able to find this out. REME rings a bell. I would love to hear from anyone who might remember him. |

Our family lived in Aden until late 1966 but my father carried on until November 1967. He was a small-time merchant\'s clerk and also a bank clerk for a while. The merchant used to sell Double Two Shirts amongst other merchandise. We saw many service personnel in our shop until late 1965. Thereafter they became infrequent as the shop was in Crater where there was most trouble. I was very young but I remember places like Khormaksar, Maala, Litle Aden, Holkat Bay, Steamer Point, etc. I was 9 years old when I went to a boarding school in India but I reckon, I can find my house from Holkat Bay and the GPO. I am now nearly 70 and my one wish is to go there once more - land of my birth. |

Interesting looking thru this site. I was there very early days prior to any of the later conflicts and in times when things were quite \'primitive\" in terms of facilities etc. Am still in touch with mate from time there but don\'t appear to be any others from my \'era\'. |

It was sad to serve there and be told nothing at the time of the history, culture, language, and ongoing supported development of the country. Minimum information was gleaned from cryptic signal messages which passed through my youthful hands from COMCEN. I spent nearly all my time within the colony, apart from one trip to Dhala as volunteer convoy guard, and one leave travelling around Kenya. It was a tragedy that the work put in by so many trusting and loyal civilians, military, and locals, was let down by inept, self-seeking, and penny pinching politicians at Westminster. |
