Philly Runners -- Welcome

Welcome to our Philly Runners forum. This message board is provided for running-related discussion in the Philadelphia area and around the world. You are welcome to start your own topics and reply to others.

You don't need to post only running-related items, but commercial interests don't have a business being on here (unless you're trying to sell your used treadmill, for example). We don't have "rules" but will try to use our best good-faith judgment.

Please do not list the full name of anybody other than yourself. Please use first names only or first name plus first letter of last name. Messages that include full names will be deleted.

When starting a topic for an event with a specific date, please list the date of the event in the subject line. For example: "Media 5 Miler Friday June 17".

Some posts will be deleted after a while due to space limitations. Have fun, and please be sure to visit our main website for more information on our club and more running-related information.

Re: Bridge connecting MLK Drive to Center City to close on Feb 25, 2023

Hi all.

The bridge connecting MLK Drive to Center City/Eakins Oval and the meetup spot for all of our runs is set to close on Monday, March 27.

This will affect all of our runs for 2+ years.

Tuesday runs will be back on Kelly Drive, as before. Turning around at the John Kelly Statue, our pre-pandemic turnaround, gives you an out and back of 4.4 miles. If you'd like a 5 mile run, keep going until you find two yellow lines across the path 2.5 miles out from the Art Museum. If you'd like a shorter run of three miles, there's also a marker of two yellow lines across the path 1.5 miles out from the Art Museum. You can also choose to turn around at any other location.

Thursday runs are now hill work and will not be affected by this closure. Speed Work in September will be back on Kelly Drive.

For Saturday Runs:

Runners looking to do less than 6 miles can do an out & back on Kelly Drive. When the runners doing the modified loop cross Kelly Drive in front of Lloyd Hall, non-loop runners should proceed out on Kelly Drive until whatever turnaround point they prefer and then come back to Lloyd Hall. There's a marker of two yellow lines across the path one mile out from Lloyd Hall (2.5 mile run from Art Museum and then back to Lloyd Hall) and there's a second marker of two yellow lines across the path two miles out from Lloyd Hall (4.5 mile run from Art Museum and then back to Lloyd Hall). You can also choose to turn around at any other location.

Runners doing the loop (either 6 mile Strawberry Mansion Bridge Loop or 8 mile Falls Bridge Loop) will proceed as follows:

• Down Kelly Drive to the light at Lloyd Hall

• Cross Kelly Drive

• Up to the tri-point intersection

• Up the middle hill to Girard Ave

• Left on Girard. Cross the river on Girard

• Cross Girard at 34th St/Lansdowne

• Down Lansdowne to Sweetbriar

• Right on Sweetbriar and

• Left onto MLK Drive.

Here’s a map for that: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/1/edit?mid=16DciqbOzHsGl6e9N2re1tsQyP1lBA_98&usp=sharing

Please check it out and make you understand where we’re going to be going.

For Saturday runs especially, we will make sure everybody knows where we're going before we start the run.

If you'd like even more detail on how to get across the intersection at 34th and Girard, send me an email and I'll send you back an email regarding the traffic light rotation at that intersection.

Tuesday/Thursday runs will continue to start and finish at the bottom of the Art Museum Steps.

Saturday runs will continue to start at the bottom of the Art Museum Steps and finish at Cosmic Cafe at Lloyd Hall on Boathouse Row.

If you have any questions or concerns, please post here or email me directly.

Re: Bridge connecting MLK Drive to Center City to close on Feb 25, 2023

When I was there at 7:15am today, the MLK bridge was closed (barricades are not up, but they are blocking passage).
The path below it is open and will remain open for a while until certain work is done on the bridge.
