We visited Carleton Rode All Saints in Sept. 2013. My cousin was honored on the plaque from a mid-air collision over Carleton Rode, 11.Nov. 1944. A very nice lady gave us a tour of the church. I would like to make a donation to the church if someone would be so kind as to how I can do that from the USA. Thanks.

My attention was drawn to Gasthorpe church after reading a piece on deserted villages in the Eastern Daily Press. I\'ve known the ruin was there for 40odd years but I\'m thrilled to have come across this excellent site and will use it in the future. Both Norfolk and Suffolk have some of the most glorious churches in the country.

Wonderful site. My ancestors came from Swannington (17th C) then via Corpusty and Weston Longville to Acle, Norwich, Aylsham, and Thetford. My ancestor Robert Case was Yard Boy in the household of James Woodforde at Weston Longville. Thank you for your efforts!

Henry Grey, 2nd Earl of Tankerville is my 17th great grandfather. Indeed, several lines descending from him & his wife Antigone ended up Quakers in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. One line became Norris family that founded Norristown through the Lloyd family of Wales.

Wonderful photographs! In doing genealogical research, looking into Great Saxham and New Buckenham, I did find an ancestral plaque but then went on to view all the photos because they are so good and give me a peek into the history of my forebears as well as a glimpse of a bit of the country I love so well. Thank you.

An incredible resource. Your enthusiasm and knowledge, shared with humour, are infectious.

My friend Guy and I are walking from London to Walsingham in a month or 2. Your work has greatly opened the journey, and helped us decide which little villages we really must backtrack to, and which can be skirted with confidence.

Should you be interested in a day\'s walking, perhaps to 4 or 5 churches, please let us know. We\'d be honoured to walk with you.

As part of pur pilgrimage, we tend to attempt to sleep in Churches. Permission, once granted, leads to a cascade of furhter permission. It\'s a personal quest, to open churches to the idea of sheltering pilgrims. Sanctuary is an old traditional purpose of the church. We condsider them as holy (hale and wholesome) places, to which it is natural and proper to get close. Sacred spaces, on the other hand, are distant stars, unreachable and untouchable. We feel there is a particular englishness to such a practical sense of holiness, a simple access to God for all without fuss.

Anyway, well done, great work, and many thanks,

Will.

Hi there! Thank you for this site. I lived in Cambridgeshire for 4.5 years and toured many of the local churches while there. I visited the Threxton church one lovely August day and found it to be one of my favorite.
Best wishes,
Robin B.

Interesting website, I have book marked the same and intend to spend more time visiting the site. My late father was always going on about his Norfolk background but very vague on the facts. So there is a little bit of interest in subject.

Wonderful and informative site, thank you Simon! Two of my great aunts died in Lower Close at Norwich in the late 1800s and I could not work out why they were listed as being of the parish of St Mary in the Marsh rather than Norwich Cathedral. Now, all is clear.
