So, there I was at the CVS to pick up a prescription. I follow two 'ladies' in the door and overhear their conversation ( I couldn't help it--they were from New York, everyone in the store heard them).
Now, In my years of work I have learned how to interpret a few accents/dialects. At one time I could think in Spanish, not any more--use it or lose it. I have worked with the French, Germans, Ukrainians and even some third world non-English speakers (like Australians). So I can even understand New York.
New Yorker One says to New Yorker Two (I'll spell it phonetically and then translate):
"Ooowaull I wahn is a noose papuh. I feel loyk oym in nowayuh." ( All I want is a newspaper, I feel like I'm in nowhere).
Please forgive me for not saying to her, "If you don't like it here, leave."
I love living here, and take offense when someone refers to it as 'nowayuh'.
My $0.02.
