NC State Record Channel Cat

I was looking at the north carolina state record freshwater fish and saw that there was no record for a channel cat. The record is up for grabs. The fish has to be over 20 pounds they say to get on the boards. I fish a catfish pond in Granville county and i have caught several that weighed aroung 25 pounds. I think i am going to go to that pond soon and float live shinners and see what i can do.

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

I caught one this past year that was 24 pounds. I have photos and witness. Is it possible to submit it now?

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

I'm pretty sure it has to be weighed on certified scales with a "state official" present.

I think there's alot of people out there who could have the record but didn't think their fish was big enough to get it, so they let it go or it ended up as dinner.

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

I think any kind of fish caught out of a pond should not count as even a citation let alone a state record. Where can the fish go? 1bigblue

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

Oh record from a pond should not count, thats so funny,so if you catch a fish lets say between two old danms on a river thats a record it should not count?? YOU SO FUNNY !!

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

Actually its two rivers to one dam, and not a five acre pond where they're fed every day by the person who stocked the pond. YOUR SO FUNNY YOUR NOT FUNNY, were do u fish... haven't seen any post from you!! WHO ARE YOU !! 1bigblue

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission's Division of Inland Fisheries keeps lists of the largest common freshwater game fish caught by sporting methods in North Carolina waters. It keeps only all-tackle records. No line-class records are listed, nor does it keep records on all species of fish. It does not recognize fish that have been caught in nets or on set lines or trot lines nor fish that have been speared, snagged or shot. To qualify for state record recognition, a fish must have been caught on hook and line in a sporting manner.

In making application, the angler must provide the following information:

the common name of the fish,
its weight on certified scales,
its length from nose to tip of tail,
its girth,
the date caught,
the location of the catch,
the name and address of a witness to the weighing,
and the name and address of the angler.

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

In many aspects I think you're right, 1bigblue, I see your point on a fish being hand fed for a few years and then the farmer/fisherman slipping a hook into the catchow and pulling out the monster. However if the fish comes from a farm pond where the fish forages on his own I would not see a problem with that. I think the fish and game folks could determine this in the process. They would determine if the fish was taken in a "sporting" manner.

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

1bigblue,

I don't think fish from Buggs should be a "Record" fish.So funny. But Buggs is so big, with so many prey fish that it would be like thowing fish food in the water. But 1bigblue,i can understand your view,it'skinda like how some tourneys work.If ya know what i mean.

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

Anyone who would stock fish in a pond, feed them pellets, let them grow huge, Catch them and stick a hook in their mouth? Get a record???

There is no honor in that. No fun. No sport!!! Anyone who woould do such a thing, BY GOD needs a a$$ whoopin. There are no 2 ways about it.

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

Isin't there a way to tell if a fish is hand fed pellets? I know they taste different becasue a buddy of mine in Danville took his lad to a fish pond. They caught 2 fish instantly and were charged by the pound. Those fish bit hooks with no bait on them. It was the craziest thing. When we ate the fish they tasted different.

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

I dont know about NC and VA, but where i live the record fish MUST be from a public body of water or a single body of water occupied by more than 50 permanent dwellings. I think this is a fair rule cuz it gives everyone the oppourtunity to catche the record fish.
In an recent enviormental class we studied the effects of different food in fish and from what i saw there is an easy way to see what the fish has been eating or what it ate. Cut open its stomach. it is easy to see if the fish has been eating pellets. You can also tell from the meat of the fish, but it is a difficult chemical test to do so. Lets just hope that no scum bag is that dis respectful to the fishing world to do a jerk thing like that. Like was said before Wheres the honor?

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

theres a huge pond about 20 mins from my house where these people pay money for big blues and flats.the pond is stocked with bait fish,no honor there either for records or citition. 1bigblue

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

I can remember a while back when someone posted about bass being used as bait fish, but that is so cool to some of you and now something else that is perfectly legal you want to boot it.Looks like some two faced fishermen on here.Let the person put a hook in it's mouth, wouldn't be the 1st time a fib has been told about a record fish.Know what i mean?
Fishing while chumming should be illegal,it's basically the same thing as a hunter hunting over a bait.

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

Buggsman, you rarely ever make any sense because you are so mean. But a couple of those points are worth pondering. Jenx

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

Know i will get some slack on this but here goes. Three years ago i caught a 39 pd. flathead and put it in my pond because no one fishes it and i thought it would help thin it out. Last year i saw him pull a half grown goose under water. A month ago i saw him sunning about a foot from the bank and he looks like about four feet long. I tried catching him on a hook but he will not bite. He has plenty to eat and i put shad in there ever once in a while for him to eat. I think i will have a state record one of these days but i dont think this should count. Everyone does not have a place to do this. As far as cheating, what goes around comes around. You will reap what you sow. I have sown some bad seeds before and now i am reeping them. So will you.

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

Great point,
Honest people will not do the wrong thing, even if it is legal. It must be cool to see a fish that big though. How big is your pond? I bet you have learned a ton from having a fish of that size in a smaller pond. Neat stuff

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

My pond is 3/4 acres and 13 ft. deep. It has plenty of bass, crappie and brem in it so i will make sure he does not go hungrey.

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

It doesn't take much to get some of you guys upset. Here is the link to the NC records that were being discussed. You will notice a few of the state records came from ponds.

You catfish specialist need to remember a lot of bass fishermen don't think fishing with live bait or trolling is fair. Hey, as long as you don't use dynamite or seine nets, who cares?

Re: NC State Record Channel Cat

Ylee, that is too cool that he ate a dang goose! You have a miniture verison of JAWS on the prowl. Are you sure you have any fish left, that guy seems kinda hungry. LMAO Thanks for the post
