I have been "up the river" a lot er both of them several miles and never ran into any shoals. My advice is to run either of them with someone who knows the river(s) or you could be a lost prop canidate!!
Right now with the water level the way it is you should be fine to run the Dan all the way to the point. This is where the Banister and the Dan run togather. I would not go to much futher than that because the first set of rocks is only a mile to a mile and a half from there.
