Joe L. Smith, 68, longtime Keota area resident died Wednesday, 20 July 1983 at Sparks


Regional Medical Center, Fort Smith, AR. Funeral Services were held in the First Baptist Church,


Keota. Burial was in Keota Cemetery under the direction Mallory Funeral Home, Stigler. Mr.


Smith was born in Walters, OK on 12 Feb 1915. He was in the merchantile, insurance and real


estate business. He lived in Keota for 31 years. He attended public school in Walters, OK and


college at Oklahoma University in Norman, OK, and Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.


Before moving to Keota, Mr. Smith lived in Tulsa where he was Secretary for United Federal


Savings and Loan. He was owner of Smith Merchantile of Keota for 25 years, insurance agent


for Farmers Union Insurance, past School Board member of the Keota Public Schools. Also


secretary for the Keota Housing Authority, past Election Board Secretary for Haskell County, a


member of the Keota Lions Club, Masonic Lodge #286 and 32 degree Mason. He was a member


of the Order of the Eastern Star, Beduim Shrine, an Honorary Member of the Keota FFA and a


lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Keota, OK. He is survived by his wife, Amy, of the


home, two daughters, Mrs. Sandra K. Short of Keota and Mrs. Pamela S. Clay of Albuquerque,


NM; two sons, Joe Gary Smith of Norman and Ronald Pat Smith of Norman; one sister, Mrs. Ann


Ford of Oklahoma City; one brother, Clyde Smith of Arvin, CA. Also eleven grandchildren and 1


great grandchild.
