My father passed on a week ago Sunday. As my mother said when the first of her parents passed, “One is never ‘old enough’ to loose a parent”.
Following is one of Dad’s favorite poems which was read at his service.
A Psalm of Life
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
What the Heart of the Young Man Said to the Psalmist
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
"Life is but an empty dream!"
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
"Dust thou art, to dust returnest,"
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Finds us farther than to-day.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,--act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o'erhead!
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing
Learn to labor and to wait.
Dianne, my deepest sympathies to you and your family! Sending you many hugs, and healing thoughts.
I still miss both of my parents, Dad after 6 years and Mom has been gone for 22 years. But I can reflect on many wonderful memories at any time, and know how loved they were and how loved back I was. Those are the memories you and your Mom will remember and get you thru the sadness.
Loved the poem.
Della & I feel your loss, we both have lost out parents long ago, But the pain is always there.
I am truly sorry for your loss. May peace be with you and yours.
peace and love be with you and yours
I am very sorry to hear this.
Thank you all for your kind thoughts and warm wishes.
I've heard the last stanza of that poem quite a bit over the years.
Diane: Sorry to hear about your dad; I know you have spent several years taking care of your parents and it is never easy when they pass. Although my dad and I didn't always see eye to eye, I still miss him.
Diane I just saw this. I am so sorry for your pain. I wish life was different but I guess as they say it is part of the journey. God Bless you and your family and bring you peace during this very sad time.
So sorry, Diane. You and yours are in our thoughts and prayers.
