“Igniting soul’s through the proclamation of Jesus Christ”.

Grace-Full, Part 3 The next part of this we have, Bitterness. Grace-full living is living without bitterness. Consider this passage from Hebrews, “See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” Hebrews 12:15. Allowing bitter roots to grow in your heart will cause you to miss the grace-full life. There are many bitter roots that can become ingrained in the garden of our hearts. The bitter root of rejection. Many of us have experienced significant rejection in our life-from parents, siblings, mates, children, friends, employers. It’s very easy to allow the pain of rejection to take root in your heart and bloom into bitterness.

What about the bitter root of unfulfilled dreams? Your princess or your dreams or your knight in shining armor is a no-show. The good life of your own family, those children you want so badly haven't been born, the education, career, success you carefully planned are still on the planning board. Unfulfilled dreams create a fertile ground for bitter roots.

It may even be, the bitter root of loss. What have you lost lately? Your job?, I did. Your pride?, it happens. Has death robbed you of a loved one? Or divorce? Or has sin taken away a close relationship with family or friend? Loss makes us vulnerable to bitterness. This verse teaches us several things about bitter roots: First, they grow. You cannot harbor a little bitterness in your heart. You can't hold onto one little bitter twig. It won't stay that size. It always grows. Second, they cause trouble. Any little bitterness will cause you trouble. It causes great stress, raises your blood pressure, shortens your life, harms your health, changes your appearance. Bitterness causes emotional and mental trouble, too. A great many of the emotional and mental breakdowns we see today have their beginnings in bitterness that was never dealt with. Third, they defile many. Defile means to spoil, ruin, harm. Bitterness spills over to everyone around you. As parents we can transfer that bitter spirit to our children, as managers or employees we can transfer it to our co-workers. It is a poison that affects everyone it touches.

Grace-full living is free from bitterness. If you’re struggling with some bitterness, I pray you will ask God to help you dig up those bitter roots so that you can enjoy the grace-full life that Jesus came to give you. Love in the Lord
