CSID to award Anwar Ibrahim with the Muslim Democrat of the Year Award
CSID to award Anwar Ibrahim with the Muslim Democrat of the Year Award at its 6th Annual Conference April 22-23, 2005
On Friday, April 8, the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy announced that it will award Anwar Ibrahim with its prestigious Muslim Democrat of the Year award at its upcoming conference in Washington DC. The year’s conference theme is “Democracy and Development: Challenges for the Islamic World: Challenges for the Islamic World” and speakers include USAID Administrator Anrew Natsios, IRI President Lorne Craner, NED President Carl Gershman, and Saad Eddine Ibrahim of Ibn-Khaldoun Center in Cairo, Egypt.
The Muslim Democrat of the Year Award is given each year to one outstanding advocate for democracy in the Muslim world. Particular attention is given to individuals who overcome hardships or challenges in his/her efforts to promote democracy. Radwan Masmoudi, President of CSID, said: “We are honored that Anwar Ibrahim will join us to receive the award. He has been a tireless supporter for democracy since his days as a youth leader and has promoted a moderate interpretation of Islam in Malaysia and South-East Asia”. Previous Muslim Democrat of the Year recipients are Abdolkarim Soroush (2004) and Saad Eddine Ibrahim (2003).
Mr. Anwar Ibrahim will give a keynote speech and receive his award at the banquet dinner on Friday, April 22, 2005, 7:00-9:00 PM, in Washington DC. Three hundred key politicians, academics, and democracy activists from the US and the Muslim World are expected to attend the event.
