Despite challenging early season weather, the Northwest Coast of Vancouver Island is living up to its reputation. We are in mid season fishing form and its only June 21st!

We’re seeing huge schools of bait, both herring and pilchard (pacific sardines), and all species of fish are actively feeding. Early season Chinook Salmon action has been fabulous… the near shore waters are producing many fish in the high twenties and thirties…. We’re also seeing the first schools of Coho despite the fact that they’re quite small this early averaging in the 4-6lb range

Groundfish action has been equally good….the 50 fathom depth contour off Cains Island has been very productive. We’re seeing many Halibut in the 75-125lb range and the Yellow-eye and Vermillion snapper have been especially abundant. Most boats are limiting on Hali's in the 15-45lb range. Largest this week were 178lbs and 224lbs respectively.

Anything Glow Green has been working for the Spring Salmon. Angelo’s Pickle Green Glow Splatterback hoochie behind a Hot Shot Golden Warrior flasher has been the hot combination in 360 feet of water at 200-225 feet depths. Herring or Mudrakers are always the bait of choice for the Hali’s

Given the strength of this early action and the size of the early Springs, we’re expecting fabulous action for the next couple of months.

Would you know if there is anyone that could provide some information on where a person could find halibut in the Alert Bay (Johnstone Strait area.

Around alert bay give the waters off Stubbss island a try if it is open.
Give Mitchell bay a try, we have done best in shallowerwater, around 80-100 ft. Also try whitecliff rocks there.
