Addis Tsehay film Award

A new Ethiopian film award entitled Addis Tsehay, literally translated as 'new sun', will be presented in October 2006 at the Hager Fikir Theater. The award, which has 15 categories in all, is organized by Addis Tsehay for Ethiopia, an NGO that works on art and social issues. The award includes 15 films that came out this year and that are currently showing in Addis Abab's cinemas.

Film director and the award's project coordinator, Biniyam Worku says that the goal is to create a bias-free and annual film award.

To ensure its transparency, they have selected 50 arts judges. "We have film professionals, theater and film instructors from Addis Ababa University, journalists and other well-known media personalities'', he said. The judges are given 40 days to watch all the films and judge the 15 categories. However, he notes that the award does not include a category for best film ''since our aim is to encourage professionals".

According to Biniyam, after selecting the winners for each category, the judges will have the right and also the responsibility to share choices with their other 49 judges.

Biniyam adds that the award trophies are specially designed to reflect the Ethiopian map and cinema.

Addis Tsehay film Award

Ethiopian films made in the year 1998, and which are to compete for the annual film award, were publicized this week. "Sixteen films and fifteen categories were announced by the organizer of the award "Tsehay LeEthiopia" Association.

Fifty judges that are professionals in cinema, theatre, videography and related fields will select the winners. Audience votes are excluded in the selection.

At a press briefing given at Hager Fikir Theatre, representatives of the association disclosed that the award is aimed at encouraging professionals and the crawling film industry to better standards.

According to Biniam, one of the representatives, there were such awards before but failed to get recognition from the public and the professionals too. This happened because there were unfair judgments and bias by the organizers. This time it is planned to have fair judgment that is free from partiality and prejudices.

At the end of the coming week four nominees from each category will be publicized. The final award is to be held at Hager Fikir Theatre days from October 23 to 25.

On the occasion the continuity of the award and the identity of the prizes are emphasized through comments given by journalists and film professionals.
