My grandmother was Minnie (Mary) Mortimore born in Witheridge 1881, daughter of Susan Mortimore, born in Witheridge in 1840 approximately, the last tollgate operator in Witheridge. When Susan died in the late 1880's, Minnie was placed with Dr. Barnardo's. Minnie had a very rough beginning in life. She came to Canada in the 1890's. During her years in Canada, she worked, married and raised a large family. She died in 1966 after a prosperous life.
Susan's parents were Robert Mortimore and Mary (possibly Greenslade.) From what I understand, they were very poor. Since doing my family history, I have copies of the 1841 census showing, Robert Mortimore was 30, Mary Mortimore was 40 (who I believe had the maiden name Greenslade), Susan was 2 and John was 5. I also notice that Mary Greenslade lived with the family in 1841. Mary Greenslade was 75 at the time.
If anyone has any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thanks.
