Hi Julie,
I hope that I can throw a little more light on your quest from my records.
Thomas Farmed East Essebeare Farm, rented from Rev W P Thomas, but he was gone by the time of the Tithe in 1837. I have traced their children from the Baptism Register and they are as follows:
Grace d of Thomas & Mary Gardener 27 Jun 1820
Elizabeth d of Thomas & Jane Gardener 30 Jan 1822
Mary d of Thomas & Jane Gardener 19 May 1824
Frances d of Thomas & Mary Gardener 27 Jun 1826
James s of Thomas & Mary Gardener 30 Jan 1828 Buried James Gardiner 17 Nov 1828
Philip s of Thomas & Mary Gardener 15 Oct 1829
However, now comes the interesting part, according to the 1841 census, his wife Mary and the children apart from Grace remained at East Essebeare where the Farmer was now Mr John Commins Leach. I can find no entry for Thomas in the Burial Register, but I am guessing that he died and his widow re-married

Sorry that I can not help you any further, but trust that this helps in some small way
Regards
