Which one did I have?
Silly question, I know. But back in/around 1971, I had a Hodaka 100 with a black frame. I've looked on all the websites I can find, but all the Aces seemed to have the red frame. I don't think it was painted black because none of the scratches I put on it showed another color underneath. So between 1969 and 1971, which Hodaka 100 had the black frame?
Thanks for any help!

Re: Which one did I have?
None of the 100's prior to 1971 came stock with black frame. They were all red. The Wombat 125cc was the first production Hodaka with a black frame - it was first produced in 1971.
So it's still a mystery what you had.

Re: Which one did I have?
Gypsy Cat what part of the country did you live in back in 1971? Would be Pennsylvania or nearby ??
Captain Ed is correct that the stock Ace 100's did not come with a black frame. But.. Hodaka sold bikes to what was the Nigerian police force I believe. In their country the color red represented the devil as I have been told so Hodaka made a small production run of black framed Ace 100's. I believe but could be all wet that the initial order was for 500 units but was cut back to 250 after the bikes were built. So again I believe there were 250 black framed Ace 100's sold and kept in the U.S. These were rumors for many years but I have actually seen a couple and one of which was brand new so they did exist. I think this was well before Ed's time at Pabatco and it is fun to learn new things all the time

"Would be Pennsylvania or nearby ??" Um, nope... Would be Washington state, pretty much the other side of the country.
The mystery continues. (sigh)

Ed you cannot remember everything. You are already like a walking Hodaka encyclopedia

Re: Which one did I have?
So I've been thinking about this, trying to sort it out. I had this bike for a couple years, until I turned 16 in 1973. (Yes, I know, I'm dating myself here). It was black, and had a compression release, but no Wombat side covers. Then again, it was used when I got it, so someone could have removed the Wombat covers. My dad is the one that told me it was a 100cc, but honestly, I never saw a title so couldn't say for certain. And I've not seen any Ace's with a compression release.
So, could I have had a 125cc Wombat, and not a 100cc Ace like I was told? That would certainly explain why the guys wouldn't let me race. They all had 70's to 90's.
thanks,

Re: Which one did I have?
Do you remember the gas cap? Was it small enough that it was a pain to re-fuel? (If so, that is a hint that it was a 100.) Or was the fuel opening a couple inches in diameter? Big enough to allow much easier re-fueling - the Wombat 125's were the first Hodies with the larger diameter gas cap.
Note that compression releases were after-market modifications - so that doesn't help identify the machine.
That comment about the guys not allowing you to race does seem to suggest that a displacement advantage or rule was being referenced. Of course, if some of 'em had 70cc scooters - and yours was a 100, they's still want to hold you out. It wouldn't take a 125 to create that problem.
Here's another question which might actually help. Was the scooter wheely prone on up-hills? The shorter wheelbase of the 100's could make it hard to keep the front end down. The Wombat's longer wheelbase made it much more controllable on up hills.

Re: Which one did I have?
No problems filling it, I remember a fairly standard opening. And I remember having to work at getting the front wheel off the ground. Not that I tried it much. (Stop shaking your head, I really didn't do that many wheelies.) So I'm thinking I had a mis-identified 125, and not a mythical black Ace 100.
We used to have impromtu/informal races up and down the power line roads. The guys had Honda 70's and 90's and the only scooter was a 100 Vespa. Until Danny got the 125cc Yamaha, I had to give them a head start. The week after Danny got the Yamaha, I got a Suzuki TS 185 for my 16th birthday and they kicked me out of the 'circuit' completely. 16 year old boys apparently don't like losing races to 16 year old girls. It was okay, the 185 was street legal so I spent more time on the road than the dirt after that.
You've been exceptionally helpful with all this Hodaka information! I'll expand my wish list to include both 100cc and 125cc. My SO seems to think I need a motorcycle restoration project to keep me out of trouble.

Er, GypsyCat's SO here. She didn't mention the fact that I'll have to live until I'm 237yo to finish all the projects I've currently got going..she also has a few issues with the fact that I really don't know how many M/C's I own..back me up here folks, please!

Oh heck yeah! I can see matching his and hers workbenches, romantic lighting (aren't ALL workshop lights dim?), an oldy/goldy station on the radio . . . and debates about who gets the torque wrench RIGHT NOW!

Re: Which one did I have?
Hey Ed,
Mucho thanks for the back-up..I forgot to mention a silly rule about having to fit the car in the garage along with the bikes..isn't that the only reason cars have reverse so that one can get them out to make room for more scooters?

Re: Which one did I have?
HEY NOW! Leave my car rule out of this! The car doesn't need to be in there while working on bikes. There just has to be enough room to park it inside at the end of the day. The Hodaka will fit nicely in the back if need be.
So is $1500.00 too much for a '72 Wombat that looks in good (not excellent) shape?
The guy called back and it's still available and I have a 3 day weekend coming up and I'm sure I can get to LA and back to Seattle in 3 days!
