The "VERMIN"

FORUM?

Doesn't this mean various points of open communication. To share experiences and expertise, to assist one another. To bring in outside experience and communication, opinion, examples.
Or is it for one person to just come off as the only one with the or a possible solution?
I would say it is not for one or a couple of minds to dominate and project themselves as the only authority. Some of us have a much broader and worldly background from which to draw from. This is not to be intimidated by or jealous of. But should be appreciated. This has not been the situation on this
"Forum"?

Re: FORUM?

Interesting handle, the "vermin" - must be an interesting story there.

Please note that I do not know who might have taken Ron to task for his posts. I do know it t'weren't me!! In fact the only problem I have with Ron's posts are when there is some hidden mis-understanding and as a result mis-leading advice is given.

I've spent several days trying to figure out how to address our head banging -- and have finally figured out that when we are banging heads it is usually because we are addressing different issues, but aren't aware of it.

And if you are reading this Ron, that is when I figured out that our first disagreement (more than a year ago) was because we were addressing different issues. You couldn't understand why I didn't "jump on board" to accept that Hodaka clutches were weak, broke off when the engines were pumped up . . . and any idiot could see that they should have been mounted on the main shaft. You were clearly talking about 90/100 clutches/engines . . . and I was thinking of 125 era clutches and bigger crank ends. So I was talking about one part while you were talking about another. The same thing happened in the discussion about tires for a stock model 93 rat. You were restoring "what was lost" when a larger diameter(rolling radius) tire was installed by changing the gearing . . . and I was addressing "what was lost" by the increased size of the contact patch.

On the current topic of major head banging - the expected effects of the installation of a reed valve on a Hodaka - I'm betting there is some hidden issue, some hidden assumption at the root of the disagreement. My main concern is that Hodaka owners who are interested in a reed valve, get good information. And while I no longer have any dyno data sheets to quote, I do know that a simple reed valve installation on a Model 93 Super Rat will make it MORE tractable at low rpm - but will also move it into the Sportsman class in AHRMA competition. The hidden assumptions I am using are:
- no carb change (other than jetting)
- no compression change/no head modification
- no pipe change
- no change to exhaust port
- no change to transfer port
- no change to intake port (except connection to new boost/finger ports)
- no change to ignition system or ignition timing
- no change to gearing or tires
- same piston/same bore/same ring
- add 4 holes to intake side of piston
- add boost/finger ports on intake side of cylinder
- bolt on the reed valve assembly with proper reeds
- adjust carb jetting as needed

Finally (yes, we are nearing the end of this message), I certainly don't agree with the concept of Ron backing out of the picture and clamming up. But he and I sure do need to make sure we are talking about the same thing at the same time! The end result would be access to 60+ man years of Hodaka experience for the readers of this forum.

Bye for now,
Ed

PS: One of the things in the back of mind has been, "How could I find myself in disagreement with Ron so often, when the description of his 03 engined/Toad framed ISDT replica bike sounds SO SWEET?" And I keep coming up with the answer, "We are misunderstanding/mis-assuming something . . . cuz you don't build a bike that sweet without knowing what you are doing."

ED
Thanks for the very thoughtful and pleasent reply.
I appreciate your courtesy.
You are a real gentleman and a class act.
I have been thinking also and realize that My bringing some points to ponder, I very well have missed the point in some instances, as well as been a bit too agressive. Also I probably have been guilty of too much information.
Sincerely only concerned about helping as well as learning which no one is too old to learn.
I pretty much work on all Hodakas every day and take my racers and my rider very seriously.Being a pretty heavy fellow to ride a 100-125 it has been a learning experience to get the best performance out of what I have to carry the weight. So what I have tried to contribute may very well not apply to others much lighter than myself.
It's a new year and a fresh start for all of us of the "Hodaka Family" It is a great bunch of guys and gals. Hope to see all of yous at another Hodaka Days.
And yes I'm very proud of my ISDT fun bike with the big tires. Still picking at it like all of us, never through.
May "GOD BLESS" and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Re: FORUM?

Ummm, no ethical issues with saying "goodbye" on the morning of 12/22/06 as "ron" . . . and then posting the starting message on this thread in the early evening of the very next day as a new guy on the forum "the VERMIN"????

I guess we'll see how it goes.

Best wishes for 2007.

Re: FORUM?

Actually
Someone gave me that name, kinda liked it and will be
having decals made which will be displayed on a project 93 rat motor project which has been in the works for a couple years. Have become quite fond of the non reed class of vintage racing and this has been an ongoing project. Have mocked up the cases several times and each time gets closer to final assembly.Have also found that the non reed 125 class is more fun due to the fact of reed motors can have some major mods done internally which "you never know"
Piston port to me is a bit more challenging and the competition seems closer. Had a lot of fun with a Piston port Combat Wombat last summer and a few of the Athena people showed up on occasion. Being too heavy I have some old husky riders doing the riding for my machines. One weekend between the Athena and some others of the Hodaka Family Hodakas made some major statements. Most of the younger folks didn't know much about Hodakas or what they even looked like.
Might have acquired some new interests.
It's always fun. Ron "VERMIN"
