(Recommendations) DVDs Related to Early Childhood & Teaching
I have recently been watching a lot of documentaries related to teaching and early childhood. I am a member of Netflix, which I love, but some of these should be available elsewhere as well. Please add to the list if you have any more recommendations! the Baby Human (mini series from Discovery Health showing lots of researchers' work in child study labs) the First Year/Teach (two PBS films on one DVD that follow inner-city teachers during the first year of teaching) Sound & Fury (examines emotional turmoil within different branches of a family as they decide to get cochlear implants for their children) I Am A Promise (Academy Award-winning documentary from HBO about a principal's struggles to run an inner-city school) Misunderstood Minds (film from PBS following a group of students struggle and learn about their abilities) the Business of Being Born (a controversial film about the maternity care system) PS: I'm dying to see "Where do the Children Play?", but our local PBS station is not running it!! Has anyone seen it?? |

Hmmm, I've seen several good ones, but I am afraid that they were all in classes and I don't remember the names!! Just out of curiosity, do you have access to the library at a local university or community college? I know growing up, local residents could also obtain member cards at the university in our town... I know that ALL of the videos we watched in class were available to be checked out at the campus library. Who knows, you may even find some at your local library?? If I happen to get back there sometime soon, I'll stop by to check the titles of the DVD's we watched... Did you see Sound and Fury - or you want to see it? I did see this in a Survey of Exceptionalities class - it was good. As much as our family is watching PBS, I have not heard anything about "Where do the Children Play" --I'll have to check into that one. I did watch a wonderful documentary they aired about NCLB -- it was a little over a year ago. VERY well done. I'd have to look up in my research to get the exact name of it - I watched it in conjunction with a large project I was working on. You found all these movies on Netflix?? I'm also interested in the "Misunderstood Minds" you mentioned... Thanks for sharing. Once again, I wish I were more help. As I begin a new semester this fall I am sure I will see at least a couple videos in classes -- I'll try to pass the titles on if they are worth sharing! |

Yes, all the ones I listed I have recently seen through Netflix. Some of them are available to watch online if you're a member. Here's the link for Where Do the Children Play? and Alliance for Childhood. |

I've seen "Where Do the Children Play?" and I definitely recommend it. Because Joan Almon, president of the Alliance for Childhood, is a member of the BAM! advisory board, she sent me a copy of the DVD. But I believe that the Alliance also sent copies to those who wanted to show them at gatherings in homes and other venues. There are some public screenings listed at: http://www.allianceforchildhood.com/projects/play/play_pbs_screenings.htm. There's one in Greensboro NC on the 28th of this month, Wendy. Is that close to you? |

Rae, Greensboro is about 2 hours west of here, but I sure would love to go! I'm thinking of speaking to our Play Group Coordinator at the Down East Partnership for Children about setting up a screening there. |

I just watched "Autism: the Musical" last night. Although I thoroughly enjoyed it, it seemed like a whole lot condensed down to a tiny bit. It could have been it's own reality series, and I would have watched. Since I have worked with a child who has ASD and have been briefly trained by the Autism Society of NC, I thought it did a good job of showing you that families with autistic children are "normal" people. BUT On the other hand, if you have little knowledge of Autism, this documentary really doesn't explain the disorder at all. |

Today in my Multiculturalism and Diversity class we watched a movie titled, "Let's Get Real" by New Day Films. This movie is shocking and makes your stomach turn. It made me want to run home and put my girls in a bubble... so they will not have to face such difficulties - and at such a young age! This is a documentary on bullying in schools featuring the students who were courageous enough to talk about their feelings. There were no actors, no scripts, just children sharing their struggles, fears, even triumphs, when it came to their experiences with bullying in school. I would highly recommend this for BOTH parents and teachers. We need to be more proactive with educating both parents and children about bullying and how to help children cope. |
