Bitburg AIr Force Base during the early fifties
Guess I been away from the "bush" too long (49 years)! My tour at the bush was from Nov 54-57. Recollection of events are bit hazy; however, I do remember one bar we used to patronize in town: the "Bamboo Bar". Funny, I never have heard anyone mention it before; perhaps it was before their time at the Bush? And, of course there was always the "Lido Bar", where maids working at the housing area used to congregate on weekends. During commander's call at the movie theater we were constantly warned that if you got caught messing around the housing area; it was an automatic 6 months sentence in the brig at Spang. Spend a lot of my week ends in K-Town (Koln), Bitburg was just a small farming community with about 12,000 inhabitans; and Spang just a pit stop. Spend lots of time on the flight line pulling guard duty; first it was F-86s and then, F-100s. But overall, it was the best duty I had in my Air Force career. So, thanks for the memories! By the way, I still drink Bitburger Pils, Bitte ein Bit! |

Hi Guys: I was stationed at Bitburg '54 ~ '56. I was assigned to the APO shelling out mail and writing money orders. We were attached to the base from the 2nd Air Postal Squadron in N.Y., so we were not called on much to pull guard duty on the flight line. I think I pulled it one time. Not too exiting, but it was my best duty assignment as it was many, many others. Got in to Lux a lot.......also, downtown Bitburg to the Lido Bar. I guess at the time that was where most of us working in the APO hung. Things changed over the years, and I guess for the better for some. For me, I wish I was back there and it was in the early 50's again. Tried to make arrangements to get back for the reunion, but it didn't work out. Found this site by accident. Just thought I'd leave a few words. I'm also signed up with the Yahoo! Group. I posted some pics with them. I think they are the first ones when you click on that particular link. Hope you all have a good 2007. God Bless!! Ron West
