Heron Mark blade and sword training
Hello hello :) I'm going to be purchasing the Heron Mark Sword by Windlass and am also interested in receiving training to use this 'fantasy blade'. My question to those of you who are already familiar with sword training and combat is, what style of sword combat would I be able to apply most effectively to this blade? In the Wheel of Time series the sword is taken from it is used in a way that closely resembles samourai flowing/slashing tactics and I do see some strong similarity in the look of this sword and a samourai katana but I'm not sure. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated... here is a link to the sword... http://www.swordsofhonor.com/ranhermarswo.html |

If i was you i would not train with it. It only has a half tang so too much swinging it around and you could have a big problem on your hands (broken blade fragments hurt like crap). i suggest getting your hands on a katana with a full tang. beleive me its a lot more safe. |

While Navier is right, the blade should be alright for 'dry practice' (not hitting anyone/anything). Considering the shape and weighting of the blade as shown in the books and in pictures of the real thing, I'd say go ahead and take a kendo class. Kendo is the traditional art of using a katana (samurai sword). Unfortunately, a good teacher is ****ably difficult to find. If in dire need, go out and buy a set of instructional videos from the best. Currently the world champ for cutting practice is Russel McCartney. If your local dojo/martial arts outlet knows someone who could teach you personally, that would be best. |
