Batter steps on plate while bunting
Do you ever have one of those nights where you make a call, sell the call, no one argues and then later you wonder if you made the right call? Last night I had a kid square to bunt, step on home plate and bunt foul. I called him out with full confidence that that would be an out. No one questioned it. Just to reassure myself this morning I searched the rules and I can't find what I'm looking for to back up my call. It's entirely possible that his heel may still have been in the box (there was no chalk left at this point). The front half of his foot was definitely on the plate, but not the whole foot. Did I blow the call? |

Calling the B/R out for stepping on the plate is located on the same page in the rulebook as the hands are part of the bat and tie goes to the runner. Look under Urban Legends. The batter's ENTIRE foot must be out of the batter's box to be called out. However, if he obviously steps on the plate...remember that poopy stick we always talk about??? That's why no one argued the call. You might still be on the field arguing why the B/R was not out because part of his foot was still in the box. I would say it's probably a pretty good call. |
