Two situations did I handle them right

In the last two days I have had two situations with coaches, nothing like back in OCT of last year. Just wanted to know if you guys thought I handled better than back then or how I could have handled one better than what I did.

First one, ball hits in front of the batter box, batter tries to get out of the way but gets hit. Coach comes running out after I award batter first. He is loud but not yelling that that's not the proper ruling. When he stopped talking, I just explained to him that it was live and that it was a hit batter. He said ok went back to the dugout.

Second situation, R3 coming home after throw to first after dropped third strike. EXTERMELY dusty field, i waited for the dust to settle to make sure I see everything. Dust settles I see R3 foot and leg across the plate, catchers glove on his waist. While he was sliding in I know he did not tag him any lower, just wanted to make sure runner did touch home.
Before I can get the word Safe out of my mouth, third base coach running down, screaming at the top of his lungs, came to a stop a bout two inches from my face. This time I did tell him to stop yelling and talk to me. No good he kept yelling, then threw his hat down on first. I ejected him...turned and walked away, he kept following me...I turned and told him to leave the field. He finally did. Is there anything on this one I could have done to prevent the ejection?

Thanks guys.. sorry so lengthy.

First situation
It sounds normal. Coach doesn't know the rules, you explain it to him, he accepts it and goes back to the dugout. Maybe ask what he has, then explain the rule. You probably did that.

Second situation
If the 3rd base coach made it to the plate before you made the call, that's an awful long hesitation to let the dust settle. I'm sure you had an over-zealous coach, but the call needs to be made quicker.

This is going to sound a little silly, but the plate doesn't move. If the field is really dusty you need to be aware of this at all times.

With the dropped 3rd strike and a throw to 1st, read your runner on 3rd. If he breaks, begin to line up your play. Remember the dusty field, use your instinct to realize that there's going to be a close play at the plate with dust flying everywhere. Find the plate early before the dust starts flying. Then you need to focus on the tag. If the runner has slid in the area where you know the plate is located (the plate hasn't moved) we know he's touched the plate, so if the tag is high call him safe.

A lot of times if the coach sees you hesitate on a call, they think you're waiting on the fielder to show you the ball - meaning you're going to call the runner out.

Could the ejection have been avoided? Probably by making a quicker call.

Thanks Jason. Appreciate the input. I asked my partner after the game and he had nothing to say about it, but i just didn't feel right about it.

Hmmmm.... what's the old saying? "Don't scream 'til you're hurt?" Sounds like the coach shoulda thought about that one. Maybe he just wanted to get home to watch TV!
