Milton Bradley vs. Mike Winters

Hey guys,

Just wondering what everyone thought of the whole Milton Bradley ordeal yesterday. Obviously Milton should have kept his cool, but did Winters have any business jawing with him like that? Was that game management? Professionalism? I know Bradley is far from a class act but I'm thinking Winters may have known what he was doing.

Your thoughts...

Re: Milton Bradley vs. Mike Winters

Well i thought it was a pretty bad situation for everyone involved. Winters should not have started jawing at him like that but then again you dont know what all was said. Bradley didnt have any business either jawing at Winters. So they were both in the wrong. But Winters said that he threw his bat at the umpire after the strike three call which is a big no no. So Winters might have had a right to tell him about that. No matter what was said though i dont think this situation should have happened. It did not look professional at all. Winters should have just walked away, but then agian i know once your in the situation its hard to do that. You get caught up in the action a lot and it makes you look stupid.

Re: Milton Bradley vs. Mike Winters

Is there any video of Bradley throwing his bat? I haven't seen any. I don't know why Winters would have told Runge that if hadn't happened, so I suppose it did. I'm just shocked that with all the cameras that are MLB games that no one has video of that.

Sounds like Bradley is a bad seed.

I worked a game Sunday and my partner and I were talking about a guy in our association that does Minor League (independent) games as well as College and High School. He said, "We have to remind Todd that when we're doing college and especially high school games that these are students and they're not the enemy."

I get the sense that sometimes the Pro umpires feel like the players are the enemy. That's too bad.

Yea i haven't seen any video of that either which is odd. They show him standing in the box forever, but never after that. I don't think he would say something like that either if it wasn't true. Another thing that comes to mind about the enemy thing. Maybe these two guys have a past which could be a reason for the situation that happened at first.

Re: Milton Bradley vs. Mike Winters

We will probably never know what exactly was said between Winters and Bradley. I remember a situation last year where there was a rookie on the plate, the batter started giving him some grief and Tim Timmons got on the batter from 1st base. I said something to Joe about it and he said that it was a good job by Timmons to get the batter's mind off the rookie umpire. While Runge isn't a rookie, that may have been what Winters was doing. I don't know.

As far as professional umpires working amateur games, I can tell you that it's definitely a climate change. While I have only worked some independent leagues, Greg, Joe and Aaron can tell you more about this than I can. But, from my personal experience the professional game is exactly that, Professional. The players and managers know your name and you know theirs. You never hear someone call an umpire "blue" and you never hear an umpire call someone "coach". For the most part, most players respect the game.

When you are used to that and then have to step onto a college or high school field, it's a culture shock. You find players and coaches (particularly at the college level) who think that you are out to get them. You find players who can't remember, or more often than not don't care, what your name is. The game moves slower, plays don't always go where they are supposed to, etc.

Unfortunately some former pro umpires cannot make that adjustment and cannot handle it. However, I've worked with Greg, Joe and Aaron at the college level and they do a great job adjusting.

Just some insight.

There's the video of it in case you missed it...

First, it doesn't show Bradley throwing his bad. But...if I had to take a guess, I'd say that he tossed his bat towards the umpire sometime after the camera cut away. We would have to see a copy of the report to know for sure.

Second, the Plate Umpire probably had his back turned while walking away from the batter on a called third strike to end the inning. If that was the case, then he would have seen the batter toss his bat in his direction. By the way, for you umpires, if you call a third strike on a guy to end the inning, you should pretty much always walk to the oppisite foul line from where the batter is going. This way, the batter will be less apt to take a shot at you. Also, it may be perceived that you are "going after the batter".

Anyway, Winter's tells the Plate Umpire what happened which he should probably do. If a guy throws a bat at an umpire while he's not looking, the umpire needs to know about it. Whether you decide to address the player or not is up to you...but...if for some reason you end up having to eject that player later in the game for a separate incident, the fact that he threw his bat at you earlier in the game may prove useful in the ejection report. Also, if this guy develops a reputation for doing this, umpires that have that player in the future can be better informed.

As far as what was really said down there at first we don't know. But Mike Winters didn't look like he got too worked up to me from what the highlights show. He didn't "go after" Bradley but rather walked away. I don't see anything wrong with this part of the situation.
