7 tips to prepare your dog for the arrival of a new baby
1. Prepare your dog for the arrival in advance. Make sure that he socializes enough not only with people and dogs, but also with small kids. Take your dog to the park and introduce him to small kids.
2. Get a baby blanket, put some baby powder or baby lotion. Hold the blanket as though it’s wrapped around a baby and carry it around the house. Set the blanket down and allow your dog to sniff and get familiar with baby scents. If the dog tries to grab the blanket or gets over excited, use a firm “off” command and give your dog the “down-stay” command.
3. Get rid of toys that resemble a baby, such as dolls and stuffed animals. Don’t take any chances that your dog might consider your baby a toy.
4. Practice talking to an illusionary baby while keeping your dog in a “down-stay” position in a separate room.
5. If you are preparing a room for the baby, make sure the dog understands he is not allowed there. Also, make sure your dog has his own space. If the dog sleeps in your bedroom and you are planning to bar him from there when the baby arrives, prepare a new sleeping space for him two or three months before the baby is due. That will allow your dog to get used to his new space before having to deal with a new family member.
6. Feed your dog. New parents often forget to feed the dog because they are giving all the attention on the baby.
7. Before the baby arrives to your home, send somebody home with the new scent. This can be accomplished by bringing a blanket or diaper from the hospital for the dog sniff it and get familiar with. |
