A Father's Day Message to his Children & Family
Over the years I have always dreaded for Father's Day to come and today (June 16, 2008) was no different. Not because I sit here and dwell over the loss of my own Dad (although I do miss him and my childhood memories remain both good and bad) but because I sit here with a loss that few Fathers can ever appreciate, understand or even discuss….
This loss is an inability to communicate with one's own children due in part to prolonged and recurring absences during their development years as well as my own inability to compromise or sheer stubbornness in their adult years.
Much of this can be attributed to my children being raised in a military environment and commonly referred to as Army Brats. They had no home to call their own; no home town to claim; friends who remained distant and afar; seldom seeing relatives and survived with a stay at home Mother with few economic resources to provide much more than the necessities in life.
Any efforts to rationalize serve no real purpose as these children were always loved and provided for at great personal sacrifice; however, for some reason they have not been able to acknowledge let alone appreciate where they are today let alone what they experienced over the years (both good and bad).
Now that I have both explained and expressed my heartfelt feelings, I have included a short poem titled "Dad is a Person" in hopes that you will understand what it is I am trying to say:
Dad is a Person
Dad is a person who is loving and kind, Often he knows what you have on your mind.
He's someone who listens, suggests, and defends. A dad can be one of your very best friends!
He's proud of your triumphs, but when things go wrong, A dad can be patient and helpful and strong
In all that you do, a dad's love plays a part. He is always there even when apart You should always have a place for him deep in your heart.
And each year that passes, you're even more glad, More grateful each day and proud just to call him your dad!
One day it is hoped that you will be able to say; Thank you, Dad... for listening and caring, for giving and sharing, but, especially, for just being you!
You remain the greatest influences in my life. Thank you for being that shining light in my darkest night, and thanks for always trying to make my loads light. Thank you for the confidence you have had in me and try to understand that my message is not intended to cause you pain or anger, but to push you to succeed at a difficult task, towards a higher level of performance at something that one day you will be able to understand and appreciate.
Regardless of your deepest feelings, I will always be your Dad! |
