Philly Runners Message Board

Welcome to our Philly Runners forum. This message board is provided for running-related discussion in the Philadelphia area and around the world.  Philly Runners was founded March 27, 2002.  You are welcome to start your own topics and reply to others.

You don't need to post only running-related items, but commercial interests don't have a business being on here (unless you're trying to sell your used treadmill, for example). We don't have "rules" but will try to use our best good-faith judgment. Some posts will be deleted after a while due to space limitations.  Have fun!

hot temperature running

Before you ask, no, this Tuesday's run, sure to be in sweltering heat, is not cancelled. But, you need to prepare for the heat! Most tips you'll see talk about avoiding the heat, such as running indoors, or avoiding peak sunny hours, but what if you are going to run in it anyway?

The tips I follow: wear coolmax rather than cotton, wear something on your head if it is sunny (and don't neglect sunscreen), bring a water bottle (or Gatorade for long distances/times) which you can put in the freezer the evening/morning before, run with someone else (or hey, even a club!), and ease up on your exertion level while you slowly get acclimated to the heat. For this last one, if you ran in this past weekend's heat, you're better primed than if you've been an air-conditioned gym on the treadmill. Build up gradually.

Note- I'm not a medical professional. These are just some tips I've learned that work for me. Others will have additional ones. Here are a couple sites with more advice:

Re: hot temperature running

I think I pretty much passed out at Penn's Landing this morning. I'm not entirely sure how I made it the 2 miles home.
