How do I get a part in a Stagecraft play?
All potential actors for a Stagecraft production will need to come to an audition. The style and length of auditions will vary depending on the preferences of the director. Sometimes you'll be sent a script or audition pieces in advance, sometimes you'll be asked to read cold. Some directors audition people in groups, others prefer to see people individually. The production manager or director will explain their process to you when you book your audition. All audition information for future productions will be on our 'Future productions' page.
How often do you hold auditions?

We hold auditions five times a year, usually about three months before a production goes on stage. So, for example, a play going on stage in May will have auditions in February. Plays with particularly large casts may have auditions even earlier. To find out when we're holding auditions, look at our 'Future productions' page.

We usually hold auditions at either the Gryphon Theatre on Ghuznee Street or at the Wellington Arts Centre/Toi Poneke at 61 Abel Smith Street. Occasionally we may use another venue. Details of the venue will be given in audition notices on the 'Future productions' page.
Do you get a lot of people auditioning?

It depends on the play, but it's usual for more people to audition than there are parts for. We usually have a lot more women auditioning than man, so there's often strong competition for female roles.
How long will I have to wait before I find out whether I've got a part?

This depends on the audition process chosen by the director, the number of roles and auditionees, and whether the director decides to do call-backs. The director or production manager will tell you in the audition how long you can expect to wait to hear from them. It's not usually longer than a week.
Does it matter if I've never acted before or have only been in school productions?

Directors vary in how much attention they pay to previous experience, but it doesn't usually matter much. What matters most is how well you demonstrate your acting talents and commitment in your audition. We often have new or inexperienced actors working alongside experienced cast members and it's a great opportunity for new actors to learn.

Yes, all cast and crew are expected to take part in the pack-out. This is usually held from 10 am to 12 pm on the Sunday immediately after the production closes. It sometimes starts earlier if there's a large, complex set or not many people.
